Suzuki Violin Program
The Suzuki Method is based on the teaching philosophy of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki (1898-1998). Suzuki realized that learning to play an instrument can happen in much the same way that children learn their native language: at an early age, with lots of listening, repetition, and in a supportive, loving environment.
Suzuki students typically begin lessons between ages 3-7. A parent or consistent adult helper commits to assisting the child with daily practice and listening homework, taking notes at weekly private lessons and attending group classes. Music-reading is learned after the child has achieved basic technical skills with the instrument. Suzuki families become part of a world-wide learning community of students, parents and teachers.
The Suzuki journey begins with parent and child observing at least one other current student’s private lesson and a group class. The first phase of private lessons prepares the parent for their role as violin “home coach”, and after a few lessons the student is ready to join.
Students in the Suzuki Program attend 30 weeks of Private Lessons and 11 Group Classes during the academic year (September-May). Each student registers for 15 weekly private lessons per semester. A 30-minute, 45-minute or 60-minute slot is reserved for each student at the beginning of the semester. Suzuki Group Classes, a core feature of the method, are held on Wednesdays at the Theodore Parker Church in W. Roxbury (1859 Centre St.) at the following times…
Group class Session I (September-October 2019)
6:00-6:45pm Suzuki Group Class (6 consecutive weeks, begins 9/18/19)
Group class Session II (Spring Semester 2020)
6:00-6:45pm Suzuki Book 1 Group Class OR Suzuki Pre-Twinkle Group Class (10 weeks total, 5 classes per Group, begins 1/22/20)
During the Spring Semester, the two group classes for the Suzuki Program will meet on alternate Wednesdays from 6:00-6:45pm. Please see Studio Calendar for dates.
Students prepare for and participate in both the Winter and Spring Studio Recitals (mid-January and late May/early June). Families will be polled 6-8 weeks in advance to determine the best possible date and time for all. Other important dates are detailed in the 2019-2020 Studio Calendar, found below. Summer lessons (June-August) will be a la carte, based on student and teacher availability.
Suzuki Program, Private Lesson Tuition per semester (2019-2020)
• 30-minute lessons $615
• 45-minute lessons $895
• 60-minute lessons $1175
Suzuki Private Lesson Tuition covers one semester’s private lessons, recital and administrative fees. Tuition for a mid-semester start is prorated. Suzuki Group Class Tuition is based on the number of students enrolled, and is determined approximately one week before the start of each semester (9/1/19 and 1/15/20). The Group Class fee ranges from $50-150, and is due with each student’s private lesson tuition payment at the beginning of each semester. More students enrolled in the Suzuki Program lowers the Group Class fee for all Suzuki families.
All new and returning students must complete the online Registration Form before receiving the semester’s Invoice and beginning lessons.
Tuition payment can be made by cash, check (Emily R. Hale) or Venmo (@emilyrhale). Payment must be received on or before the first day of classes each semester (September 9, 2019 and January 20, 2020).
